Entrepreneurship within the Healthcare sector can be a daunting challenge.  Meanwhile, the industry continues to experience innovations, new technology, improved patient outcomes, and an influx of funding.  Please join us as Kwame Ulmer, MedTech Color Founder, and Troy Barring, Pitch Competition Top 10 Participant, provides us some incredible insights on starting a healthcare technology company and the journey of a minority-based founder. Kwame and Troy will speak to us through the lens of MedTech Color, aiming to build a community of leaders of colors in Medtech and increase the number of underrepresented executives who enter and stay in the industry. Troy participated in the 2022 MedTech Color Pitch Competition and won Second Place receiving $25,000 in capital to support his company, TAB Diagnostic. Charisma Kumar (Moderator), Senior Director - Medtronic Neuromodulation

Moderator Charisma is Senior Director of Clinical Research for Pain Therapies in Medtronic's Neuromodulation division. Her team is focused on generating high-quality, clinical evidence for Spinal Cord Stimulators and Targeted Drug Delivery products. She is committed to expanding patient access and increasing clinical adoption for therapies that restore function to patients living with chronic pain. She has held a variety of roles in Market Strategy, Real World Evidence and Software Development across the medical device industry for over 15 years. She has consulted on market growth strategy for large healthcare systems at McKinsey. Charisma has a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins, MS in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western and an MBA from UCLA Anderson.

Kwame Ulmer, Founder and Executive Director, MedTech Color

Kwame Ulmer is the Managing Partner at MedTech Impact Partners - A Regulatory Strategy Consulting Firm. Kwame brings twenty years of experience evaluating medical technologies in the government and private sector, and serving in senior operating roles at medical device companies to help companies successfully engage the FDA. He has personally evaluated more than 1,000 medical technologies in his career. Kwame spent 12 years at the FDA in progressive leadership roles. He also served as Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance at Implant Direct, a Danaher Corporation operating company. He is also a venture partner at Wavemaker Three-Sixty Health – the leading Southern- California based, early stage venture capital firm (Seed and Series A) focused on the healthcare industry. He leads the medtech practice and participates in all aspects of fund management (e.g. deal sourcing, diligence, negotiation and advising portfolio company management teams). Kwame sits on the board and advises several privately held medtech companies. Kwame serves on the board of the University of Virginia Licensing and Ventures Group and California Life Sciences. He is also a lecturer and researcher in medtech innovation at the University of California, Los Angeles. Kwame founded MedTech Color, a nonprofit with a mission to advance the representation of persons of color in the medical device industry. He earned his B.S. in Physics from Lincoln University, and has two Masters degrees from the University of Virginia, in Materials Engineering and Business Administration.

Troy Barring, Founder and CEO at TAB Diagnostic

Troy Barring is a C-Level Business builder and has held a variety of senior leadership positions in both small and large companies in General Management, Sales & Marketing, R&D and Operations. He has more than 15 years as a General Manager/VP Sales & Marketing at Fortune 500 companies with P&L’s ranging from $80M-$400M. Troy has board experience at three private organizations and two non-profits. Previous leadership roles include COO at Avita Medical, a regenerative medicine company that specializes in a novel treatment for wound and skin defects ; COO and President of Orthozon Technologies, a medical device company focused on innovative surgical access products; General Manager of Baxter Healthcare’s ambulatory pump business, a global leader of ambulatory medication infusion devices; SVP/COO for North American Scientific Medical, a leader in radiation therapy products in the fight against cancer. He also held various senior leadership roles at Biosense Webster, a leader in the science behind the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, and a division of Johnson & Johnson. Troy served as Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Services, Vice President of R&D and Operations. Prior to joining Biosense Webster, Troy was the Vice President and General Manager of Intravascular Ultrasound at SCIMED, a division of Boston Scientific Corporation. Troy began his career in the healthcare industry at Sorin Biomedical, where he was Business Manager and Manufacturing Manager for its custom products division.
